Museum Thursday

In honour of the International Children’s Book Day the Museum Thursday for this week will focus on children’s literature.  Perhaps you have a favourite book from your childhood? Welcome to the Smith’s Cottage between 12 and 15 o’clock, to discuss what children’s books mean for you. Free entry.

The International Children’s Book Day is celebrated annually, on writer H.C. Andersen’s birthday. Books meant for children are a relatively recent phenomenon from the 19th century, with Andersen being an early author writing with children as his intended audience. Besides entertainment, children’s books were meant to be educational tools, which would teach them manners and valuable lessons in preparation for adulthood. In Finland writer and educator Zacharias Topelius was a strong proponent of popular education, as well as a pioneer of children’s literature.
